A very pretty antique Art Deco Carved Coral 9ct Rose Gold Floral Brooch.
Particularly crisp example, no signs of repair or alteration.
A fabulous piece of antique jewellery dating from the late Edwardian to the early Art Deco period, circa 1920. The brooch is handmade with a rectangular-shaped piece of coral in the centre depicting flowers.
The coral is mounted in 9ct rose gold and held securely in place by claws.
Diving for coral has taken place in the Mediterranean Sea ever since Roman times, and in the 15th century Torre del Greco which is now part of the Naples commune became known for its coral diving and harvesting of red coral.
These miniature works of art need to be studied, and you need to know the manufacturing process to fully appreciate their character. A modern one would be cast in one piece, having little `definition` left after the casting process.
Rectangular coral measures 25.1mm x 15.4mm.
Overall dimensions are 26.2mm x 16.7mm and 4.8mm in depth.
Weighs 4.6g.
Stamped '9ct'.
Beautiful piece of Edwardian/Art Deco jewellery.
