Antique Victorian Old Cut Diamonds 15ct Gold Brooch.
Possibly the finest bar brooch I have seen in 35 years of trading....
It weighs twice as much as the norm
It is 50 to 75 percent larger than the norm.
Diamonds are 200 percent bigger than the norm.
These miniature works of art need to be studied, and you need to know the manufacturing process to fully appreciate their character.
The wire work will have been twisted by hand and soldered on by hand, as would each tiny ball, each leaf and each floral decoration.
A modern one would be cast in one piece, having little `definition` left after the casting process.
Brooch has 8 old cut diamonds positioned in the the centre arranged to create a star set design in the centre, with a larger diamond positioned in the centre.
Brooch has floral designs on both sides.
Brooch is manufactured in 15ct gold.
Outer diamonds measure approx. 2.00mm in diameter.
Principal diamond measures approx. 3.00mm in diameter.
Estimated total diamond weight 0.60 carat
Brooch measures appox. 49.3mm in length and 21.7mm in width and 6.2mm in depth.
Weight 8.0g
Hallmarked .625 for 15ct gold. Dated Birmingham 1878.
Condition: Overall Excellent. A remarkable survivor.
Brooch has its original safety chain attached with strong links. Even the safety chain is heavier gauge than you usually see.
Settings and goldwork mint, pin is original, good and strong, we have just gently cleaned by hand to retain patina.
Original gilding and `bloom` intact.
Postage packing and insurance is complimentary.
