Antique French 18ct Gold Cherub Religious Medallion / Pendant Signed by Penin Poncet
(Chain not included)
A lovely antique medallion/pendant manufactured in 18ct gold.
The charming and unusual pendant depicts a cherub whilst the reverse has a clock and the word 'bapteme' (Baptism) engraved.
It is signed by the famous Lyon engraver "Penin Poncet".
The Penin family is known for four generations of engravers in Lyon. Ludovic Penin was born in 1830 and died at the age of 38 in 1868. In 1864, he was awarded the title of "Graveur Pontifical" for the quality of his work. His father, Marius Penin, trained a young sculptor, Alexandre Poncet. Penin became Penin-Poncet after Alexandre Poncet married Ludovic Penin's daughter, Marie-Emilie, and the company flourished.
Under magnification it shows the hand manufacture; these miniature works of art need to be studied and you need to know the manufacturing process to fully appreciate their character.
