A stunning pair of antique drop earrings crafted in 15ct gold, featuring rich 'foil-backed ' amethyst stones. Dating circa 1800 to 1815, the late Georgian to Regency period.
Unusually, this pair has fine decorative settings.
A foil-back setting is a closed-back mounting in which a thin sheet of reflective metal foil is placed directly behind a gemstone before the collet or bezel is sealed, with the deliberate purpose of intensifying the stone's apparent brilliance and depth of colour. The technique predates the development of modern faceting styles and open-claw settings by several centuries.
The practice of foil-backing gemstones can be traced back to Minoan times (circa 2000 BC); however, it is most closely associated with the Georgian and early Victorian periods.
These pieces showcase the refined elegance and meticulous craftsmanship of the era.
The warm glow of 15ct gold complements the deep purple hues of the amethyst, creating a timeless accessory suitable for both special occasions and discerning collectors.
Each earring displays the hallmarks of period authenticity and quality workmanship.
Length: 37.7mm including the shepherds crook.
Width: 17.7mm at the widest point.
Weight: 7.12g (the pair).
Unmarked, Tests 15ct Gold.
