Antique Carved Intaglio Carnelian Pendant on 9ct Gold Pearl Set Chain.
English Circa 1890-1900.
The pendant has a round carnelian in the centre with beautiful a carving of Ceres (the goddess of agriculture, grain crops, fertility and motherly relationships in Roman Mythology) note the ear of wheat in her hair.
These works of art need to be studied, and you need to know the manufacturing process to fully appreciate their character.
This superb antique pendant is manufactured in 9ct rose gold with a 9ct gold chain attached.
Its a rarity to have survived, all intact with its original fittings and in this condition.
6 natural split pearls surround the hardstone carving, 6 natural pearls are set at intervals in the chain, its a stunning and rare antique jewel.
Carnelian measures approx. 17.8mm in diameter.
Pearls on the pendant measure approx. 1.8mm in diameter and pearls on the chain approx. 3.0mm in diameter.
Pendant measures 27.5mm x 21.5mm and 3.7m in depth.
Chain measures 16.5 inches in length. Equivalent to 41.9cm.
Combined weight of 6.6g
Stamped '9' for 9ct gold. there is an anchor, denoting Birmingham manufacture and another unidentified mark.
Dates from the Victorian period.
CONDITION: Excellent ; Settings and goldwork are good, we have just gently cleaned by hand to retain patina. Original gilding and `bloom` intact. Some wear to the gilding near the clasp end of the chain, that's all.
This is a antique item. It is in very good condition making it excellent value for money when compared to a new equivalent.
