Antique Coral Gold Lace Brooch. Good Size.
Particularly crisp example, no signs of repair or alteration.
A fabulous piece of antique jewellery dating from the late Georgian to the early Victorian era. The brooch is handmade with a large rectangular-shaped cabochon coral piece in the centre, as well there are 12 round pieces of cabochon coral around the centrepiece.
The coral is mounted in rose gold and set into Georgian 'cut-down' collets.
This type of brooch would have been worn as a scatter brooch hence the term “Lace” brooch.
Diving for coral has taken place in the Mediterranean Sea ever since Roman times, and in the 15th century Torre del Greco which is now part of the Naples commune became known for its coral diving and harvesting of red coral.
These miniature works of art need to be studied, and you need to know the manufacturing process to fully appreciate their character. A modern one would be cast in one piece, having little `definition` left after the casting process.
Rectangular coral measures 18.2mm x 11.5mm.
Round corals measure 6.0mm in diameter.
Good size, overall dimensions are 32.7mm x 26.3mm and 7.5mm in depth.
Weighs 8.9g.
Unmarked, Tests gold.
