Antique Victorian Diamond, Pearl and Ruby 15ct Gold and Platinum Spider Bar Brooch.

Highly collectible and sought after, antique insect jewellery always seem to find new homes quickly.

A fabulous piece of antique jewellery. Manufactured in 15ct gold and platinum; the front of the brooch is platinum whilst the remainder is manufactured in 15ct gold, and has a nice weighty gold safety chain attached.
The brooch is handmade to resemble a spider. It has large cultured split pearl set into his back, and an old European cut diamond set into his head; additionally, it has 2 small cabochon rubies to represent the eyes.
This piece was made at the beginning of the 20th century and captures the elegant, nature-inspired style of the period.

Spiders build webs that are efficient traps. They possibly represented craftsmen and artists profiting from their talent and skill which was very much in keeping with the industrious nature of the Victorian period.
The popularity of insect jewellery and other jewellery featuring natural motifs can be linked to the late Victorians turning away from machine industrialization and once again embracing the beauty of nature.

15ct gold was only a legal standard of gold in British jewellery between 1854 and 1931. This means that any piece of 15ct antique gold jewellery from Britain dates somewhere between 1854 and 1931 and you have a genuine piece of antique or vintage jewellery.

These handmade miniature works of art need to be studied, and you need to know the manufacturing process to fully appreciate their character. A modern one would be cast in one piece, having little `definition` left after the casting process.

Diamond measures 2.5mm in diameter.
Pearl measures 4.9mm in diameter.
Rubies measure 1.0mm in diameter.

Spider measures 21.4mm x 20.8mm.
Good size, overall dimensions are 52.6mm x 20.8mm and 7.2mm in depth.

Weighs 5.0g.

Unmarked, tests 15ct gold and platinum.

Dates from the late Victorian period to the early Edwardian period, circa 1900.

A beautiful piece of antique jewellery will look stunning against a blouse, tie, or cravat.

Will quickly become a family heirloom and 'go to' piece, this stunning brooch now on the market after being in private hands for decades, and looking for a new `forever home`
