Antique Victorian Diamond, Ruby and Sapphire Closed Crescent Moon Rose Gold and Silver Brooch.
A fabulous piece of antique jewellery. The bar brooch has a crescent moon in the centre which is set with 11 tapered old '8' cut diamonds, in the centre of the crescent moon there is also an old European cut diamond, a ruby and a sapphire.
The ends of the bar brooch also have an old '8' cut diamond mounted in a star setting.
The gemstones are set in silver with a rose gold back; this was the normal practice at this period.
The diamonds are well matched, white and bright; whilst the ruby is a gorgeous red and sapphire is a light blue.
We believe that the finest old European cut diamonds carry a unique character and charm, unparalleled against their modern counterparts.
Traditionally in antique jewellery design the moon symbolises the start of a relationship which, it was hoped, would “wax” into a marriage.
Likewise, a crescent moon dates back to second millennium BC and is the oldest symbol known to man. It became most popular in jewellery in the Georgian and Victorian periods. Crescent moons celebrated the Feminine moon goddess and are associated with female empowerment.
Under magnification it shows the hand soldering; these miniature works of art need to be studied and you need to know the manufacturing process to fully appreciate their character.
Diamonds vary in size, largest measures 2.9mm in diameter and smallest measures 1.4mm in diameter.
Ruby measures 3.1mm in diameter.
Sapphire measures 3.0mm in diameter.
Good size, overall dimensions are 41.9mm x 14.6mm and 5.6mm in depth.

Tests gold and silver.
