Antique Edwardian Star Set Ruby 9ct Gold Etruscan Revival Bar Brooch. Very Crisp Example.

A lovely genuine piece of antique jewellery, the brooch has a star set round ruby in the centre and has a highly decorated finish with hand-applied 9ct gold wire work which is in the Etruscan style. 
On the reverse is an oval locket section.
 Ruby is a gorgeous deep red.

The gold work is called “Etruscan style” after the ancient Etruscan jewellery where the gold wire was hand applied in great detail. In the 1860s there was a movement called the Etruscan Revival as many finds from the Etruscan period were being unearthed in Italy. Jewellers such as Castellani embraced the challenge of recreating the art and pieces were painstakingly made with hand-applied gold wire work. This brooch is an excellent example of craftsmanship with fine-applied gold detail throughout.

Under magnification it shows the hand soldering; these miniature works of art need to be studied and you need to know the manufacturing process to fully appreciate their character. 
A modern one would be cast in one piece, having little `definition` left after the casting process. Every piece of decoration on this brooch was made separately and soldered on by hand, its a skill not replicated today.

The ruby measures 2.0mm in diameter. 

Brooch measures 45.3mm x 19.9mm and 7.1mm in depth.

Weight 5.1g. 

UK hallmarked 9ct gold. Dated Birmingham 1907.
