Antique Victorian Fitted Case Set of Large Natural Coral and 15ct Gold Shirt and Collar Studs
Particularly crisp example, no signs of repair or alteration.

A fabulous piece of antique jewellery dating from the mid Victorian era. The dress set is handmade with 6 collar studs which have large cushion-shaped natural coral beads and 15ct gold rings on the reverse. There is also 3 smaller coral shirt studs which also have 15ct gold gold backs.
They are in their original fitted case, and in very good condition - they seems to have spent most of their life preserved in their box.
The natural coral is a fabulous salmon red colour, and are very impressive.

Diving for coral has taken place in the Mediterranean Sea ever since Roman times, and in the 15th century Torre del Greco which is now part of the Naples commune became known for its coral diving and harvesting of red coral.
Because of it’s wonderful natural salmon to deep red colouration it was carved in to trinkets and jewellery for the Grand Tourists in the 1820s to buy to take back home.

These miniature works of art need to be studied, and you need to know the manufacturing process to fully appreciate their character. A modern one would be cast in one piece, having little `definition` left after the casting process.

The collar studs vary in size, largest measures 13.3mm in diameter and the smallest measures 10.9mm in diameter.
Shirt studs measure between 9.8mm and 10.1mm in diameter.
