Antique Victorian Sapphire, Ruby, Rose Cut Diamond & Natural Split Pearl Butterfly 15ct Gold Bar Brooch

Highly collectable and sought after, antique animal jewellery always seems to find new homes quickly.

A fabulous piece of antique jewellery that is crafted in 15ct gold. This handmade Victorian jewel resembles a butterfly, the wings and body are encrusted with natural split pearls, and also has a large rose-cut diamond within the centre of its body. As well the body is highlighted with 2 rubies and 2 sapphires on the edge of the wings. It is also set with 2 rubies to represent its eyes.
There is also a natural pearl at the end of the bar.

This piece was made late 19th, early 20th century and captures the elegant, nature-inspired style of the period.

Butterfly brooches are always popular as they are not only decorative but have a lovely meaning. Butterflies express beauty and elegance and represent a long life, reincarnation & liberation.
The popularity of insect jewellery and other jewellery featuring natural motifs can be linked to the late Victorians turning away from machine industrialization and once again embracing the beauty of nature.

These handmade miniature works of art need to be studied, and you need to know the manufacturing process to fully appreciate their character. A modern one would be cast in one piece, having little `definition` left after the casting process.

Split peals vary in size, the largest measures 2.1mm and the smallest measures 1.0mm in diameter.
Rubies vary in size, the largest measures 1.9mm in diameter and the smallest measures 0.80mm in diameter.
Sapphires measure 2.2mm in diameter.
The diamond measures 2.9mm in diameter.
Pearl measures 4.4mm in diameter.

Lizard measures 17.6mm x 13.9mm.
Good size, overall dimensions are 45.9mm x 13.9mm and 5.6mm in depth.

Weighs 5.3g.

Unmarked, tests 15ct Gold.

Dates from the late Victorian period, circa 1890.

A beautiful piece of antique jewellery will look stunning against a blouse, tie, or cravat.

Will quickly become a family heirloom and 'go to' piece, this stunning brooch is now on the market after being in private hands for decades, and looking for a new `forever home`
