Highly Sought After and Rare Victorian Etruscan Revival 15ct Gold Woven Link Necklace with Scarab Clasp.
Perfect for your antique pendant, or worn on its own.
Very few 15ct examples are left out there.
A delightful and rare antique Etruscan revival 15ct gold necklace that dates dating to the mid-Victorian period, circa 1860-1880.
The necklace is manufactured in 15ct yellow gold; it has a handmade woven link design with a scarab in the centre and a rope border; the necklace uses a secure tongue and box clasp.
The Scarab has a decorated finish with hand-applied 15ct gold wire work which is in the Etruscan style. The scarab is a symbol of renewal and rebirth.
The gold work is called “Etruscan style” after the ancient Etruscan jewellery where the gold wire was hand applied in great detail. In the 1860s there was a movement called the Etruscan Revival as many finds from the Etruscan period were being unearthed in Italy. Jewellers such as Castellani embraced the challenge of recreating the art and pieces were painstakingly made with hand-applied gold wire work. This necklace is an excellent example of craftsmanship with fine gold detail throughout.
15ct gold was only a legal standard of gold in British jewellery between 1854 and 1931. This means that any piece of 15ct antique gold jewellery from Britain dates somewhere between 1854 and 1931 and you have a genuine piece of antique or vintage jewellery.
It's a rarity to have survived, under magnification it shows the handcrafting and hand soldering; these miniature works of art need to be studied, and you need to know the manufacturing process to appreciate their character fully. A modern one would be cast, having little `definition` left after the casting process and no character.
IMPORTANT NOTES ON CONDITION - PLEASE READ.
Shows signs of wear, there are abrasions to the clasp and woven links; however, it is in remarkable condition considering its age (it is 150 years old!), and it is still perfectly wearable (with respect). A close study shows the hand-woven wirework is lightly squashed in areas - it is wearable and looks fabulous on the neck, but is not a £10,000 mint example, it is priced according to its condition.
The clasp measures 15.2mm in diameter.
The scarab measures 10mm x 9.8mm.
The chain measures 18 inches in length. Equivalent to 45.7cm
The links are 3.5mm in width.
Weight 21.5g.
This is a pre-loved antique item, making it an excellent value for your money compared to a new equivalent.
It has been ever so gently cleaned in our workshop.
