Antique Victorian Hardstone Perseus and Medusa 15ct Gold Cameo Brooch.
please study the photos and see there are two faces, Medusa is engraved hidden into Perseus head/helmet.
A lovely genuine piece of antique jewellery, the brooch is manufactured in 15ct gold and has a oval hardstone cameo in the centre depicting the profile of Perseus wearing his helmet; additionally, the profile of Medusa carved within the helmet to portray the tale of Perseus slaying Medusa.
The artist intricately sculpted the white vein of the hardstone to bring the delicate profile to life.
15ct gold was only a legal standard of gold in British jewellery between 1854 and 1931. This means that any piece of 15ct antique gold jewellery from Britain dates somewhere between 1854 and 1931 and you have a genuine piece of antique or vintage jewellery.
Under magnification it shows the hand soldering; these miniature works of art need to be studied and you need to know the manufacturing process to fully appreciate their character.
A modern one would be cast in one piece, having little `definition` left after the casting process. Every piece of decoration on this brooch was made separately and soldered on by hand, its a skill not replicated today.
Hardstone measures 18.2mm x 14.4mm and 3.3mm in depth.
Brooch measures 20.2mm x 16.5mm and 9.3m in depth.
Weight 3.4g.
Not marked but tests 15ct gold. Circa middle of the Victorian period, 1870-1890.
Beautiful piece of estate jewellery, will look stunning against a blouse, tie or cravat.
This is an antique item making it excellent value for your money when compared to a new equivalent.
The settings are in good condition and can be worn every day (with respect!).
